Convocation Ceremony for New Fellows (FCCP)

Convocation Picture

New Fellows receive an invitation to attend the Convocation ceremony, which is held each year at CHEST—The Annual International Scientific Assembly. At the Convocation, new Fellows participate in an inspiring ceremony, which is followed by a reception for colleagues and guests.

The History of the American College of Chest Physicians' Convocation Ceremony

The first convocation for conferring Fellowship certificates was conducted by the ACCP Board of Regents at the annual meeting in June 1942 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. As was true then, all annual convocation ceremonies are open to members of the College, their families, and friends. In June 1945, a resolution was adopted stating that all new Fellows must attend the annual convocation to receive their Fellowship certificates. New Fellows receive an invitation to participate in this ceremony for two consecutive years. If they are unable to attend after the second year, their Fellowship certificates are mailed to them.

The Chair of the Board of Regents, who is also the President of the College, presides at the Convocation and confers honors and awards granted by the Board. Following the Fellowship Pledge, taken by the new Fellows, the Convocation is addressed by the incoming President of the College. The custom of wearing academic caps and gowns for the Convocation was initiated in 1984 during the Silver Anniversary annual meeting, which lent additional dignity to this impressive ceremony.

During the Convocation in June 1956, the Cuban Chapter presented its national flag to the College for permanent display at the Executive Offices. Thereafter, many chapters throughout the world followed suit, and during an executive session at the Fourth International Congress on Diseases of the Chest in Cologne, Germany, August 1956, 18 chapters presented national flags to the College. Flags of 104 countries are now displayed at the Convocation Ceremony.
